Getting Started

Settings

What every row in Lode's Settings does, from language, currency and Start of Month to notifications, Lode AI and backups.

On iPhone, open Settings from the gear in the top-left corner of the Dashboard. On iPad, choose Settings in the sidebar. The rows are grouped into cards, described here from top to bottom.

Language

Lode is available in 11 languages: English, Čeština, Deutsch, Español, Français, Português, Русский, Українська, 日本語, 한국어 and 中文 (简体). On first launch it uses your iPhone’s language if Lode supports it, and English otherwise.

You can give Lode a different language from the rest of your iPhone. The change applies straight away. Starter categories you haven’t renamed switch to the new language, and names you typed yourself stay as you wrote them.

Currency

This is your main currency. The Dashboard’s total balance is shown in it, Statistics converts totals from accounts in other currencies into it, and new transactions use it by default.

When you pick a new currency, Lode asks Change Currency? and explains that existing transactions keep their original currency. Nothing is converted or lost, and each account keeps its own currency. For more, see Multi-currency & exchange rates.

Start of Month

This sets the day your financial month begins, so you can run each month from one payday to the next. Statistics, the Dashboard and Budgets all follow it. Recurring bills keep their own dates.

  • Pick a day from Day 1 to Day 30, or Last day. The row shows Calendar month when the month starts on the 1st.
  • The Preview shows the dates of This month and Next month before you commit.
  • Months that don’t have the chosen day use their last day, so day 30 falls on 28 February.
  • Lode asks Change start of month? because the totals are recalculated for the new boundaries.

The setting syncs through iCloud to your other devices.

Appearance

Choose System, Light or Dark. System follows your iPhone.

App Icon

Default is free. Gold, Ocean, Midnight, Emerald and Prism come with Premium.

Accent Color

This is the color of buttons, switches and highlights across the app. Default is free. Blue, Purple, Pink, Orange and Green come with Premium. If Premium ends, the app icon and accent color return to Default.

Notifications

The row shows On or Off depending on whether iOS lets Lode send notifications. Inside:

  • Allow Notifications is the main switch. It also covers bill, debt and goal reminders. Your choices below are kept while it’s off.
  • Expense Reminder is a nudge to log your spending. Choose a Frequency (Daily, Weekly, Every 2 Weeks, Monthly or Quarterly), a day if it applies, and a Time.
  • Apple Pay Payments confirms each payment your Wallet automation logs, and tells you when one couldn’t be saved.
  • Shared Account Activity tells you when someone adds a transaction to a shared account.
  • Month Summary reminds you to review last month’s statistics.
  • Budget Alerts warns you when a budget gets close to or goes over its limit. Pick a Threshold of 50%, 75%, 80%, 90% or 100%.
  • Trip Reminders arrive the night before a trip starts, on its last day, and when an open trip has been running for weeks.
  • Project Reminders arrive a week before a project’s deadline and on the day itself.
  • Send a test notification sends a sample so you can check everything works.

If you turn on Allow Notifications while iOS has notifications switched off for Lode, Lode shows Notifications Disabled. Tap Open Settings to allow them in iOS Settings.

Lode AI

This switch lets Lode send data to its AI.

  • Turning it on shows AI Data Processing. Lode AI sends your text and financial summaries to Google Gemini through a secure proxy, and nothing is stored on Lode’s servers. Tap Continue to agree. The same question appears the first time you use the chat or voice entry, so you don’t have to turn the switch on here first.
  • Turning it off asks Turn Off Lode AI? first. On Premium, the summaries on the Statistics and Budget screens go back to the text the app writes itself, and the chat, voice capture and Siri shortcuts stop working. On the free plan, voice capture and Siri shortcuts stop working, and everything else stays the same.

See AI chat for what Lode AI can do.

Show Cents

This is on by default. Turn it off to show whole amounts without the decimal part, both in the app and in widgets. Your amounts are stored exactly as entered.

Hide amounts isn’t a Settings row. To cover every money figure before you hand your phone to someone, tap the total balance on the Dashboard. Tap it again to show the figures.

Premium

This row appears only on the free plan and opens the Premium screen. Once you subscribe, the row disappears, and you can manage your plan from About. See Lode Premium.

Your data

These rows open the lists of everything you track:

Backup & Sync

  • iCloud Sync shows the sync status: Waiting, Syncing, a green check when all is well, or a red icon with an explanation when something is wrong. If sync isn’t working, see Troubleshooting & support.
  • Import brings in data from another budgeting app or a bank statement. See Importing your data.
  • Restore from Backup loads a Lode backup file (.json).
  • Export Backup and Export CSV save your data as a backup file or a spreadsheet. Both are Premium.
  • After an import, Last Import shows what came in, and Undo Last Import removes the items it created.

See Backup & Restore for details.

Automation

This row sets up automatic logging, with two options side by side: Bank Notifications and Apple Pay. The Apple Pay option appears on iPhone only.

Both guides include Remembered Merchants, a list of every merchant whose payments you’ve moved to another category. Lode puts that merchant’s future payments in the category you chose. Swipe a merchant away to forget it and let Lode choose again. The list syncs to your other devices.

See Bank notifications and Apple Pay automation.
