Tracking & Planning
Debts & loans
Keep track of money you lent and money you borrowed: record repayments, set a due date with a reminder, and see what's left at a glance.
Debts track money that changes hands between you and someone else, whether that’s money you lent out or money you borrowed. Each debt shows how much has been repaid and how much is left.
Creating a debt
Touch and hold + at the bottom of the Dashboard and choose Debt. If you have no debts yet, you can also scroll to the Debts section of the Dashboard and tap Track a debt. You can also open the full list (View all next to Debts, or Settings → Debts) and tap +. On iPad, open Dashboard in the sidebar.
- Choose
I Lentfor money someone owes you, orI Borrowedfor money you owe. Contact: the person’s name. Type it, or tap the person icon to pick someone from your contacts. The templates at the top (Friend,Family,Business,Colleague,Other) fill in a starting name, icon and color.Amount: the total, in any currency. Tap the currency code to change it. New debts start in your base currency.Start Date, plus an optionalDue Date.Pin to Dashboardis on by default and shows the debt in the Dashboard’s Debts section.Record the money changing hands: turn it on and pick an account to add a matching transaction for the day the debt starts. If you lent the money, it leaves the account; if you borrowed it, it arrives in the account.
Recording payments
Open a debt and tap Payment at the bottom of the screen, or touch and hold a debt in the list and choose Record Payment. Enter the amount, date and an optional note. The editor shows what’s still Remaining, and it warns you if a payment is more than what’s left.
Turn on Record in account to have the payment move money in a real account. A repayment you receive adds money to that account; a repayment you make takes money out of it. Leave it off to track the debt without touching your balances.
The transaction uses the same amount as the debt, so pick an account in the debt’s currency.
Withdraw (in the debt’s ••• menu) works the other way: it takes back part of what’s been repaid, so more is owed again. You can withdraw up to the amount repaid so far.
Your payments are listed on the debt’s page with a progress chart. Swipe a payment to delete it, or touch and hold it to edit it. Once an active debt has payments, the page also shows a Projected payoff date based on your pace so far. If the debt has a due date, it also says whether you’re On track or Behind schedule.
How a debt’s status changes
Debts are Active, Settled or Archived. The Debts list has a tab for each, plus search and a sort menu that can also filter by Lent or Borrowed.
- Paid in full: when payments reach the total, the debt is settled automatically and a
Paid in fullsheet appears. - Settled by hand: choose
Mark Settledto close a debt early, for example if the rest was forgiven. This only changes the status; it doesn’t record the missing amount as a payment. The sheet then saysDebt settled. - Reopened: if you delete or withdraw a payment so less than the total is repaid, or raise the total, a settled debt becomes active again. You can also choose
Reactivate. - Archived:
Archivehides a debt from the active list; the closing sheet offers it as a shortcut.Unarchivebrings it back.
Deleting a debt also deletes its payments and any account transactions linked to it.
Reminders
When a debt has a due date, you can turn on Enable reminder. Choose how many days before the due date to be notified (up to 30, or Same day) and at what time. The default is 1 day before at 9:00. Reminders only fire while the debt is active.
For money someone owes you, Send Reminder (in the debt’s ••• menu or in the list’s touch-and-hold menu) opens the share sheet with a friendly message. The message names the person and the amount still owed, ready to send in Messages or any other app.
On the Dashboard
The Debts section shows your pinned, active debts with their repayment progress. Settled and archived debts leave the Dashboard. To pin or unpin a debt, use Pin / Unpin in its touch-and-hold menu.
The message bar at the top of the Dashboard can also flag a debt that’s past due or due within the next three days. Tap it to open your debts.
Currencies
Each debt keeps its own currency, and its amounts and payments are shown in that currency. Lode AI also quotes each debt in its own currency. Summaries that add debts together, like the Debts tile in Statistics and the Dashboard’s message bar, convert them to your base currency using cached exchange rates. See Multi-currency & exchange rates.
Debts and Lode AI
Lode AI (Premium) sees your active debts in two groups: money you owe and money owed to you. For each debt it knows the person, what’s left and when it’s due, so you can ask who still owes you or what you owe. You can also create a debt just by describing it in the chat.
Free and Premium
The free plan includes up to 3 active debts. Settled and archived debts don’t count toward the limit. Premium removes the limit and adds the Debts tile in Statistics and the Debts Home Screen widget (see Widgets).
